Frequently Asked Questions

What is Benedict’s Law?

Benedict’s Law refers to new statutory protections introduced to improve allergy safety for children and young people in schools.

The measures strengthen expectations around areas including school allergy policies, staff training, emergency medication, Individual Healthcare Plans and the management of allergy-related incidents.

Do schools need allergy awareness training?

The Department for Education's statutory Allergy Safety in Schools guidance requires schools within its scope to put allergy safety training in place for staff.

The purpose is to help ensure staff understand allergies and know how to respond appropriately when a pupil experiences an allergic reaction.

Is Benedict’s Law training just for school first aiders?

No.

Allergic reactions can happen anywhere within a school environment, so allergy awareness should extend beyond designated first aiders.

Teachers, teaching assistants, lunchtime supervisors, office staff, pastoral teams and other staff may all potentially encounter a pupil experiencing an allergic reaction.

What is anaphylaxis?

Anaphylaxis is a serious and potentially life-threatening allergic reaction.

Recognising the symptoms quickly and taking appropriate emergency action is therefore an important part of school allergy safety.

Does the course cover adrenaline auto-injectors?

Yes.

The course introduces staff to adrenaline auto-injectors (AAIs) and their role in responding to anaphylaxis.

Depending on the delivery format selected, practical training can also be incorporated using appropriate trainer devices.

Is this EpiPen training for schools?

EpiPen is one commonly recognised brand of adrenaline auto-injector.

Our training focuses more broadly on adrenaline auto-injector awareness and emergency response, rather than teaching staff to associate anaphylaxis treatment with only one brand of device.

Can you provide training at our school?

Yes.

Oldham First Aid Training can provide on-site allergy and anaphylaxis training for schools across Oldham and surrounding Greater Manchester areas.

Contact us with the approximate number of staff requiring training and your preferred dates.

Can the training be delivered as a twilight session?

Yes.

We can discuss after-school and twilight Benedict’s Law training to help schools train staff while minimising disruption to lessons and the normal school day.

Do you provide training for nurseries?

Yes.

Although the precise statutory position differs between different types of education and early-years settings, allergy awareness and emergency response training can also be valuable for nurseries, preschools, early-years practitioners, childcare providers and wraparound-care staff.

Contact us and we can help identify the most appropriate training option for your setting.
